Lymphedema is a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of lymph in the tissues, which leads to swelling, mainly in the arms or legs. This pathology can be primary, due to congenital malformations of the lymphatic system, or secondary, often following surgery, radiotherapy or parasitic infections.

Symptoms include a feeling of heaviness, persistent swelling, hardening of the tissues and, in advanced cases, skin changes such as thickening or ulcers. Complications may include recurrent infections and, in rare cases, tumour developments such as lymphangiosarcoma.

The management of lymphedema is based on a combined approach that includes:

  • Compression therapy: use of bandages or elastic garments to promote lymphatic drainage.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage: massage technique to stimulate lymph flow.

  • Exercise: Activities aimed at improving circulation and reducing swelling.

  • Skin care: Maintaining good hygiene to prevent infection.

In some cases, surgeries such as lymphatic-venous bypass or lymph node transfer may be considered to improve drainage. It is essential to consult specialists for an accurate diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan.
